The Real O.C.

Today we took a trip to the O.C. so that Lucinda could visit with Grandma and Grandpa. It’s also a chance for us to get out and do some non-kid stuff for an afternoon. So we went to see “Finding Neverland“. It was good and entertaining, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that we got to go out and be a ‘couple’ again, rather than having to be parents. So after the movie, we were faced with the usual problem we have when we go there. What is there to do around here? So we did the thing that they have in abundance there. We went shopping! Of course, all the places look the same. Just big faceless malls. But who can argue that tattooing hasn’t hit the mainstream when we walked into a mall in Orange County and saw a billboard with a prominent tattoo theme?

That’s funny about “Finding Neverland”. Yesterday Cassidy wanted to see it because Johnny Depp was in it, and Gina thought “hmmm, Peter Pan movie, might as well take both kids”…Liam, being seven, said it was SO BORING! He got home and he and I watched Spidey-2 on DVD to bring him down.

I haven’t seen the movie yet. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen any movies that don’t contain faeries, wizards or horses in a very long time. I suppose I should get out more?

We try and get out whenever we can. I know what you mean about seeing mostly kids’ movies. It’s a treat to see something different once in a while. It’s difficult, but generally worth the effort.

When I was growing up in Orange County, we used the term “OC” to refer to the sheriff’s deputies who always showed up to bust our beach parties. It was a bummer.
There actually are non-mall things to do there. The Balboa (Newport) area has walking, piers, a cheap ferry, pleasurecraft, mom-and-pop ice-cream shops, saloons, a soon-to-be-reopened movie theater, and lots of nice sand and bitchen waves. Santa Ana has the Bowers Museum. Let’s see… What else? Hmmm. Ummm… plenty of malls!

Yeah, we know about stuff in Newport, but that’s a long way from Leisure World. And of course, don’t forget about the Dentistry Museum in Santa Ana.
